LightUp Nigeria: Empowering Electricity Consumers

In May 2024, MWFAAN, through its Policy and Advocacy Cluster, hosted the “LightUp Nigeria” Policy TownHall, a pivotal event designed to educate Nigerian consumers about their rights and responsibilities under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) 2023. This initiative aimed to simplify the complexities of the CPA, helping Nigerians navigate the electricity sector with greater confidence. The session was led by Olajumoke Delano, a renowned energy professional and multi-jurisdictional lawyer with over 30 years of experience in energy and infrastructure. Olajumoke’s expertise spans Nigeria, England & Wales, and New York, USA. As a passionate advocate for Sustainable Development Goal 7, she has been instrumental in promoting access to safe, clean, and affordable electricity.During the TownHall, Olajumoke delved into critical aspects of the CPA 2023:- Metering Practices: Why meters are linked to properties rather than individuals.

Energy Consumption: Effective ways to monitor and regulate usage.

Energy Theft: Understanding its consequences and how to report it.

State Electricity Systems: Featuring innovations like those in Ekiti State.

Consumer Protection: Engaging with NERC and other regulatory bodies.

This impactful event was made possible through the visionary leadership of Mr. Godwin Henry, the Cluster Lead of MWFAAN’s Policy and Advocacy Cluster, and Julius Ilori the Special Duties Secretary, both of whom meticulously planned and executed the initiative. Their dedication, along with the hard work of other Policy and Advocacy Cluster members, was instrumental in ensuring the success of “LightUp Nigeria.”The TownHall concluded with a strong call to action, encouraging participants to actively report energy theft and other violations in their communities. “LightUp Nigeria” successfully empowered attendees with the knowledge to advocate for their rights and contribute to a more transparent and efficient electricity sector. #LightUpNigeria #ElectricityConsumers #EnergyAdvocacy #MWFAAN #PolicyTownHall
