On April 26th, 2024, Manamuz Electric LTD proudly unveiled and commissioned its latest clean energy agriculture nexus infrastructure: a Refrigerated Aggregation Center (RAC) in Aguobu Iwollo, Enugu State. This groundbreaking facility was established through the Nigeria Offgrid Energy Challenge blended finance award, supported by the U.S. African Development Foundation (USADF) and All On Partnerships for Energy Access.
The commissioning ceremony, held at the Enugu State Polytechnic (ESPOLY) campus in Aguobu Iwollo, celebrated the collaboration of diverse stakeholders from various sectors of the economy. The facility represents a significant step forward for sustainable agriculture and energy solutions in the region, and indeed for the prevention of post-harvest losses in Nigeria.
Innovative Infrastructure Features
The Refrigerated Aggregation Center (RAC) is equipped with:
Two fully solar-powered cold storage units: Ensuring the freshness and longevity of agricultural produce, reducing post-harvest losses.
Two greenhouse farms: Facilitating the cultivation of crops in a controlled environment, promoting sustainable farming practices.
Office spaces: Providing administrative support and coordination for agricultural activities.
A water gallery and overhead tanks: Supplying an efficient irrigation system to support the various farm settlements. The entire facility is powered by a 34kW solar plant, which not only supports its operations but is also projected to supply excess energy generation to the surrounding community. This will further aid local agricultural endeavors, promoting energy access and sustainability.
Benefits for Smallholder Farmers
Smallholder farmers, who are responsible for producing 80% of global food, often face challenges such as lack of access to energy, smart agro-mechanization, and cold-chain infrastructure. The Refrigerated Aggregation Center (RAC) addresses these challenges by providing much-needed infrastructure support, improving the storage and distribution of perishable goods, and enhancing the overall agricultural value chain.
Celebratory Commissioning ceremony
The event was honored by the presence of distinguished guests, including His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization, Hon. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru. The ceremony was also attended by local and international partners, cross-sector stakeholders, and members of the press.
The Aguobu Iwollo community members turned out in full force, showcasing their enthusiasm and support for the new facility. They expressed their excitement by dancing vibrantly and proudly displaying their cultural heritage and talents. The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a pivotal moment for the community, signaling a brighter future for agricultural productivity and economic growth.
The commissioning of the Refrigerated Aggregation Center (RAC) by Manamuz Electric LTD is a landmark achievement for Aguobu Iwollo, Ezeagu LGA, and Enugu State as a whole. It sets a precedent for innovative, sustainable solutions in agriculture, energy, and community development. This initiative not only enhances food security but also empowers local farmers, contributing significantly to the overall socioeconomic progress of the region.
